In his upcoming Painting course James Green is planning lots of experimentation with paint textures, seeing how sand and other materials can add to paint . It should be fascinating, allowing the class to try out new ideas while also pursing all the themes that they want to work on and develop as individuals too.

If you’re looking for some ideas about highly textured work where artists have added unconventional materials to paint have a look at George Braque, Jean Dubuffet, Picasso, Leon Kossoff and Frank Auerbach.

The Painting class starts on Monday 23 April.

There’s just 7 days left until the Cardiff Open Art School summer term programme starts on 23 April, so book your place now on our drawing, painting, learn to use the potter’s wheel, surface decoration for pottery and stone lithography courses. We’ve got just a few places left for relief printmaking and photography too. You can book and pay over the phone on 029 20416628.

Cardiff Open Art School also runs short weekend courses so coming up we’ve got a one day Letterpress course on Saturday 21 April with tutor Sarah Emily Edmonds and two one day Introduction to Digital Photography courses on 12 May and 21 July with Jen Evans. Jen’s course is brilliant for those who don’t want to invest in a flashy camera but simply want to get the best shots with the one they’ve got, so she’ll teach you all the trick of the trade from making the most of available light to clever composition, helping you transform you pictures – well timed for summer holidays!

Undergraduate courses

CSAD’s strengths are in art, making, design and technology. We are interested in the relationship between arts and sciences, and in situating the student in the real world. Students on our programmes have genuine choices in their studies and can work in any of the media we have available. Our students work on projects with students from other disciplines, deepening their appreciation of other ways of working and thinking, whilst fully engaging in their own.
