Undergraduate courses

Like many art schools in the UK, Cardiff School of Art & Design no longer charges annual studio fees. Instead, CSAD undertakes to cover the costs of all materials needed and consumed in the development of a student’s skills and technical ability within the requirements of their programme.

In CSAD, skill development is achieved through a programme of technician demonstrator led sessions. Some of these are compulsory, for example, those directly associated with the subject, others can be elected by the student to broaden their interests. The competence of a student in a skill is assessed and confirmed by a technician demonstrator and is recorded in the student’s ‘Passport’.

Beyond this, CSAD will provide materials as and when it is able to do so, especially those that are available through re-cycling. However, in the main, the costs of materials for individual projects will be carried by the student, especially if these are unusual, one-off or highly specialised. Therefore, students are responsible for the materials used in all work that is self-generated.

CSAD keeps this under careful review and engages in regular discussion with student representatives to assess how the provision can be developed to everyone’s benefit.

CSAD does not charge for the use of equipment in the School, with the exception of special equipment that is in the Fablab and elsewhere within the School where special arrangements prevail.

The use of FabLab equipment, outside of formal sessions, is subject to the payment of a membership fee and an hourly charge.

Field trips that are part of core learning will be paid for by the School. Additional visits are occasionally arranged which are optional and where the students may be asked to share the costs.

The costs of study abroad, including exchanges, placements and projects are the responsibility of the individual student.
