“When growing up in the Panjab, India, I was not aware there was such a thing called ‘Art’; though my mother decorated our house with beautiful wall murals using clay. It was never called Art. One could find many other examples of beautiful objects of daily use; those enhanced the quality of life. To hold a beautiful object on your hand, or to stand facing a unique work of art, one feels a delight whether one has any formal education in aesthetics or not. This is considered the intrinsic worth of a work of art”

S O U N D I N G S: thought over time

Susan Ryland, Helen Thomas & Michael Beiert
8th November – 6th December 2012

Soundings: thought over time uses geological devices to examine two parallel, but related areas of research into figurative thought in art and music. Core samples will be taken from sodden stacks of Encyclopaedia Britannica and the research papers of artist Susan Ryland and musician Helen Thomas. These core samples will be laid out in open casks and marked at key intervals. Over time as the paper dries, increasing amounts of partially blurred and faded textual Information will be revealed to the viewer, in a process akin to a self-opening book.

This collaborative work will create a dialogue between materials, sound and thought to explore how metaphor and metonymy generate new meaning. The Geological sampling of encyclopedaedias alludes to the accumulation and sedimentation of language and knowledge over time and provides a means for re-viewing and reflection upon the research process.

Susan Ryland is a practicing artist, researcher and arts educator, specializing in Drawing, printmaking, video, sound works, site and event specific public art projects.
Helen Thomas is a lecturer, researcher and oboist specializing in music since 1900, the temporality of music and metaphor theory.
Michael Beiert is currently studying towards a PhD in Electroacoustic Composition at Liverpool University with a specialist interest in exploring ideas of Open Form and Aleatory aiming to create flexible performance structures.

Undergraduate courses

CSAD’s strengths are in art, making, design and technology. We are interested in the relationship between arts and sciences, and in situating the student in the real world. Students on our programmes have genuine choices in their studies and can work in any of the media we have available. Our students work on projects with students from other disciplines, deepening their appreciation of other ways of working and thinking, whilst fully engaging in their own.
