Product Design

We offer the following awards in Product Design:

As a Product Design student at CSAD you will learn through creative and technical enquiry-based learning, informed by well-developed theoretical and historical positions. The intensity of our programme and the demands of the profession of Product Design demands self-motivation and autonomy, as the basis for originality and risk taking. We support and promote the absence of boundaries, as the basis for real innovation.

Product Design at Cardiff School of Art & Design is international in its outlook. Our students regularly travel on exchange with courses in Europe and usually have exchanges available in the USA and Australia. We have particularly close links with the Samsung Art & Design Institute (SADI) in Seoul, South Korea and our students have the opportunity to continue their studies to Masters level both with us or with our partners and friends at SADI in Korea.

Aside from the opportunity to travel abroad, you will have the chance to undertake a period of work experience with one of the many manufacturing companies, technology companies and design companies who are associated with the programme and who from time to time set live projects and competitions, and who frequently employ our graduates.

Our design studios and workshops simulate a professional design environment. The spaces promote real thinking as well as creative play, innovation and risk-taking. We like experimenting and sometimes even like getting things wrong, before we get them right. In this, we can employ a range of approaches to proto-typing and testing, from blue foam modeling, to Computer Aided Design, right the way through to advanced rapid prototyping technologies. CSAD also hosts one of the few MIT FabLabs in the UK as well as the National Centre for Product Design and Development Research where further advanced prototyping technologies can be found. CSAD has exceptionally well-equipped workshops, across the School, which are supported by technician demonstrators highly skilled in their crafts and processes.

All of our programmes are designed to put you at the centre of your studies, you will have lots of chances to chose different seminars and projects. So whether you are technically minded, or an imaginative creative or a bit of both, Product Design will give you every opportunity to shape your learning around what you want to do and around your future. Being a part of one of the best Art & Design Schools in the UK, you have the chance to use any of our resources and to work with other students in textiles, fine art, illustration, ceramics, making, graphics and architecture. We have found that our students are making the most of this releasing a phenomenal creative energy across the School and making it a very exciting place to be.

We have a particular international research expertise in Human Centred Design, Interaction and Physicality and also Technology Philosophy and Trajectories. The Product Design academic team are also practicing designers who, over the years, have designed for such companies as Bentley Motor Cars, Apple, Hoover, Sony Ericsson, Seymour Powell, The Product Group, Glasdon, London Associates, Pace-Micro, PDD as well as many others. So you can be assured that we have the expertise in usability testing, concept development and brand development you will need to be a successful designer.
