Research at CSAD
The School is host to a wide variety of exciting research and actively seeks to collaborate with academic and industry partners. We engage with cutting edge design technologies, engineering and material arts, as well as fine arts, and the history and theory of art and design.

Dr Jeffrey Jones made Professor of Ceramics
Congratulations to Dr Jeffrey Jones, who has recently been made a Professor of Ceramics. Prof. Jones’ research focuses on historical and contemporary developments in ceramics. His book, Studio Pottery in Britain 1900-2005, is a major survey of the field. His more recent work explores the shared interests of British post-war studio ceramicists and sculptors, for which he received a Research Fellowship at the Henry Moore Institute. The research led to an international conference convened with Andrew Renton (National Museum Cardiff) in 2012. Professor Jones is co-founder/editor of Interpreting Ceramics, the first online, refereed ceramics journal. He established the National Centre for Ceramics in Wales with Prof. Moira Vincentelli (Aberystwyth University). New work includes ‘Fifty Years of Ceramics in Wales’.
RESEARCH DEGREES
CSAD has a long history in the generation of art & design research. It has an active and supportive research environment, and its supervisors have significant expertise in the various ways in which art, design and ecological built environment practice can contribute to knowledge.
The School welcomes applications from graduates wishing to pursue MPhil, PhD or Professional Doctorate research. For further information on the range of art and design subjects in which CSAD offers research degrees, the research interests of our supervisors, and examples of recent graduate research visit Research Degrees.
WIRAD
WIRAD consists of centres, groups and networks under six over-arching themes; Creative Pedagogies, Design Enhanced Human Futures, Inclusive Arts, Design: Policy & Practice, Ecological Built Environment Research and Enterprise, Fine Art & Ceramics, and Film, Photography & Screen Media.
Centre for Ceramics Research
Research covers many aspects of practice in the discipline, including the theorising of artists’ creative practices, and the history of studio ceramics. Visit the Centre for Ceramic Research WIRAD web page here.
Centre for Fine Art Research (CFAR)
A coherent and ambitious programme around Fine Art research including painting, printmaking, time-based and performance, art history and aesthetics. Visit the CFAR WIRAD web page here.
Experiential Research Atelier (ERA)
ERA is an international cross-disciplinary research and development centre which collaborates with researchers in areas such as computer science, life sciences, perceptual psychology, psychophysics, neuroscience, and phenomenology. ERA aspires to push the boundaries of understanding perceptual experience – how we perceive and are aware of the world. Visit the WIRAD webpage here.
Material Matters
Material Matters aims to research the ways traditional methods of making in textiles may interface with digital textile practices, analyse the impact this has upon creativity and innovation and disseminate the findings widely to the field. Visit the WIRAD web page here.
Ecological Built Environment Research and Enterprise (EBERE)
Research and enterprise that is centred on the creation and preservation of the Built Environment from an ecological perspective, which adopts a holistic approach to achieve this at the micro level for shelter and up to the macro level for communities and beyond. Visit the EBERE WIRAD web page here.
MeAT
Design research lead by a philosophical discourse centred about embodied interaction, the exploration of how technology is enacted as a component of the soma and the development of strategies for the implementation of enactive technologies. Visit the MeAT WIRAD web page here .
Programme for Advanced Interactive Prototype Research (PAIPR)
PAIPR is investigating methods for rapid design and development of computer embedded products such as mobile phones and PDAs. Visit the PAIPR WIRAD web page here.
CARIAD: Centre for Applied Research in Inclusive Arts and Design
The CARIAD researchers put people at the heart of design. The group represent a mulit-disciplinary team including film, animation, graphic and interaction design, software art, haptics, textile art practice, product development research, health psychology, and performance analysis. They work in a fast-emerging field in which the arts contribute to health, wellbeing, social inclusion and healthcare practice across a range of settings and end-user populations. This includes artists, health care professionals, community workers, and researchers in the public, private and voluntary sector. The active participation of end user populations with specific developmental, cognitive and sensory needs us the driver for our work. Visit their WIRAD web page here.
