Biography

Dr Cathy Treadaway is an artist, educator and writer. Her PhD research investigated the ways in which digital imaging technology impacts on the creative practice of artists and designers; the theme of digital technology and creativity is continued in her current research which focuses on the importance of touch, physicality and experience in perception and creative practice.

Cathy is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, has a Master of Arts in ceramics (University of Wales) and a B.A. (Hons.) in textiles and fashion (Loughborough University). Her research interests have been stimulated by her considerable experience working as a freelance surface pattern designer, developing artwork and colour concepts for the ceramic tableware and textile industry. She has expertise in large format digital ink-jet printing for textiles, three-dimensional printing (rapid prototyping) and is fluent in an array of design software applications.

Dr. Cathy Treadaway has undertaken collaborative research with universities in the UK, USA and Australia and is a member of CARIAD, DIGIT (link), Smart Clothes and Wearable Technologies (link), part of the Design Enhanced Human Futures theme within WIRAD. Cathy is a reviewer for a number of international academic journals and regularly presents her research at conferences around the world.

Current research

Cathy’s current research explores the ways in which technology supports creativity. Her concerns are focused on perception, cognition and making processes which are investigated through practice led projects and documentary research methods. Collaboration is used as a vital means of ensuring validation of research findings and she frequently works with other artists and designers to create artworks for exhibition, to test out theories and explore ideas. Examples of research projects and artworks can be found on: www.cathytreadaway.com

Her recent work includes: investigations using 2 and 3D digital print technology to explore sensory perception; crafting processes and hand use; collaborative creativity using digital technology; creativity and wellbeing.

Cathy is Visiting Research Fellow in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Bath.

Undergraduate courses

CSAD’s strengths are in art, making, design and technology. We are interested in the relationship between arts and sciences, and in situating the student in the real world. Students on our programmes have genuine choices in their studies and can work in any of the media we have available. Our students work on projects with students from other disciplines, deepening their appreciation of other ways of working and thinking, whilst fully engaging in their own.

Undergraduate information: Undergraduate courses | Download the Undergraduate prospectus (pdf format) | Open Days

Postgraduate courses

Our Masters, MPhil and PhD awards have been designed to give real opportunities for postgraduate students to explore their disciplines through their own practice, employing challenging ideas that will enable a significant step forward.
